How to Install WordPress on Plesk?

WordPress is open source software and content management system that is widely used to create websites, blogs, and apps. As the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, 27% of the web relies on WordPress for building hobby blogs or big news sites. However for Windows developers and designers, it is must be depressed to know that WordPress is built on PHP and MySQL and licensed under the GPLv2 or later.

Plesk is a web hosting and WebOps platform, in addition to a control panel for users. It can be used for handling a number of complicated tasks due to its ready to code environment, multi-server management and easy to access dashboard. As of today, there are more than 300,000 servers configured Plesk to automate over 10 million websites and 15 million mail boxes.

If you have just purchased an ASP.NET hosting solution with Plesk control panel included, you may also look forward to benefiting from the powerful yet user-friendly WordPress CMS. Here in the post, we are going to introduce two ways available for having WordPress installed with Plesk.

Install WordPress on Plesk with the WordPress Toolkit

WordPress Toolkit is a single management interface that makes it possible for you to install, configure, as well as manage WordPress with ease and quick.

Advantages of WordPress Toolkit

There are plenty of reasons that you should use it to help install WordPress on Plesk control panel:

  1. Centralized installation, activation, update and removal of WordPress plugins and themes
  2. Automatic and manual update of WordPress instances
  3. Selective securing of WordPress instances
  4. Cloning of WordPress instances
  5. Flexible synchronization of changes in files and databases between WordPress instances
  6. Management of WordPress debug options
  7. Management of WordPress search engine indexing
  8. Support for APS and non-APS instances
  9. Server-wide WordPress management for server administrator

Before working with WordPress, you are required to have the WordPress Toolkit extension installed in your Plesk control panel. For owners of Plesk Web Host and Plesk Web Pro editions, they don’t need to pay extra money for purchasing the WordPress Toolkit extension any more because it will be included into the control panel by default. But for owners of Plesk Web Admin edition, the extension needs to be purchased separately.

Now, let’s get into the installation of WordPress on your Plesk control panel in the help of the WordPress Toolkit.

Installing WordPress

Firstly, navigate to Website & Domains > WordPress then you will see the Install option, click it and you will be offered the following installation choices:

  • Install (Quick): it means that when you choose this option, you can have the latest WordPress version installed on your Plesk control panel, meanwhile, the default settings will be available.
  • Install (Custom): if you are looking for changing some default installation settings, you can choose this option. It allows you to select the desired WordPress version, set up the administrator user, rename the database, make settings auto-updated, and more.

Integrating WordPress Toolkit with WordPress Installations

No matter which method you use to add the WordPress installations, via the WordPress Toolkit or the Applications page, they are ensured to automatically appear in the WordPress Toolkit.

While for those you install them manually, you still need to attach them to the WordPress Toolkit manually. To do that, you can go to Websites & Domains > WordPress, find the Scan button then click on it. Next time, when some new copies of WordPress are installed manually, you have to repeat the previous navigations as well if you want to attach them to the WordPress Toolkit. Furthermore, if your Plesk control panel and WordPress have just upgraded from an earlier version, attaching all existing WordPress installations to the WordPress Toolkit is also a highly recommended option.

Likewise, to detach a WordPress installation from the WordPress Toolkit is quite easy. You just need to go to Website & Domains > WordPress, find the name of the WordPress installation you are going to detach, then click Detach. Very easy, isn’t it? All the detached WordPress installations won’t appear in the WordPress Toolkit unless you perform a new scan for them.

Whatever way a WordPress installation is installed, either through the Applications page or using the WordPress Toolkit, it can be completely removed by navigating to Website & Domains > WordPress, finding the WordPress installation names and clicking Remove.

Updating WordPress Installations

WordPress Toolkit at the same time makes it possible for you to update your WordPress installations automatically or manually.

To set up automatic updates for the WordPress installations, just go to Website & Domains > WordPress > Auto-Update, and select the WordPress installations for which you want to set up automatic updates, and click Switch On Auto-Update.

If you just want to manually update a certain WordPress installation, as mentioned above, go to Website & Domains > WordPress, select the checkboxes corresponding to the WordPress installation you are looking to update, and click Update.

That’s it. You should have a working WordPress installation on your web server.
